It’s wild they would do this since Jellyfin is so good. It won’t take much enshittification for me to drop Plex even though I have a lifetime pass.

It’s crazy too. The only reason I used Plex instead of Jellyfin is they had open subtitles integration on their ios app which as a deaf person is useful for me.

Anyways, a couple months ago I realised a way to set up jellyfin plug and play on both infuse and vlc video players on ios which have opensubtitles too, so now the only thing keeping me on Plex is habit. I’ve already switched for movies I just use Plex for my TV library. They’ve basically dug their grave at this point. Bye bye plex.

Lifetime Pass here. Dropped them when they added streaming services, I saw where they were going and I didn’t like that.

I’m just waiting for PS5 support before I move to Jellyfin (I’ll be waiting forever)

Amazon Prime got ads, Crunchyroll got ads(But fortunately it’s only for free users :X), Netflix has an ad tier. We escaped from TV land precisely because at the time it was better and had no ads, now they wanna just throw all those fun times away. Streaming imho is problematic anyway because of ownership. Sure you can enjoy that movie on a certain service’s catalog now, but what about even 1 year into the future? I guess most people don’t care about what happens to media, unless it’s books. But imho, all media can have the same impact on us, whether movies, books, games or music or anything. If it made a impactful event on your life, and suddenly the providers say “Sorry, we don’t have the rights for that anymore.” wth is the point of having media in the first place?!

This article feels a little misleading. In the one screenshot they have, the rentals UI isn’t even the first tab you see. It’s like the third or fourth and explicitly not the home tab.

With the current Plex apps, you can ignore their “premium” offerings. I’m not seeing anything here that implies that won’t still be the maintained trend.

I don’t personally use their premium stuff and I do dislike how it complicates the server I share with my family, but I dunno maybe some people like it?

    Still rooting for jellyfin tho

Currently, the beta app lacks some features, including playlists, casting, live TV (over-the-air), DVR scheduling, library management and advanced video playback controls like speed adjustment.

How much you want to bet “currently” becomes “forever” for most platforms? I bet they neuter every single app except the web/PC interface

I’m fine about rental. Ad support is a privacy black hole.

Also they took away the ability to share your library and watch with others online…no doubt because that competes with their enshitified plan of ads and paid rentals…

The last time I set up Plex, I couldn’t figure out how to access my library from the Android TV app. I clicked through all the menus, and all I saw was random shit not from my library. That was the day I installed Jellyfin, and I haven’t looked back since.
