The outrageous death of children is almost historically unique.

I’m not sure this person should be commenting on history.

You think the vice chair of the U.N. Child Rights Committee might not know what they’re talking about there?

Maybe. Maybe not. The Un appoints people to Committee from nations that commit abuses the Committee is studying, in the hopes they will be inspired to stop committing those abuses.

You know, like how Iran was appointed to chair the the human rights Committee despite routine violations of human rights.

The fact is the Un’s only goal is appeasing dictators to keep peace. It is the geopolitical equivalent of giving car keys to a toddler to play with to make them stop throwing a temper tantrum.

Arguably those countries are the ones most in need of sitting down and working out how to meet the goals set.

The alternative is a circle jerk of nations who have already achieved it or higher standards congratulating themselves.

I know which one is more likely to bring about the needed change.

those are who should be working out how to meet the goals set. not the ones setting the goals.

Why? They’re the ones who can set realistic goals for them.

Nor does the existence of these goals prevent nations from going above and beyond, it’s about bringing the baseline up.
