It’s legal for prisoners to unionize — and it can be invaluable for incarcerated people who are often laboring in difficult conditions without pay. @[email protected]’s Michelle Pitcher talked to Texans in and out of prisons who are helping empower prisoners to seek better conditions — including the right to be paid and to refuse work.

If they are NOT being paid and are NOT allowed to refuse to work, are they really prisoners?
Or are they slaves?Who is benefiting from this slave labor? Where does the money go?

Well, yes, prison labor is slave labor. We never abolished slavery.
@TruthSandwich @Flipboard @TexasObserver
Indeed.
When the south lost the Civil War, they just moved slavery from the plantation to the prison.
@ZhiZhu @TruthSandwich @TexasObserver. That’s exactly right — per the article: “In 1865, the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution abolished slavery — except as punishment for a crime. This legally permits Texas to force the incarcerated, including more than 40,000 people convicted of nonviolent crimes, to work for no pay under threat of punishment. Texas is one of only seven states that takes advantage of this free forced labor.”

The North won the Civil Battle but lost the Civil War.
The secession was aborted, but the slavers just changed the legal pretext for slavery, perpetuating it under Jim Crow.
And now they control the RNC, turning it into the party of white supremacy.

Hummingbirds live life on the edge. @KnowableMag looks at how these tiny creatures can shut their bodies down almost completely, fly thousands of miles, sometimes across open oceans, sometimes upside down and backwards, and can generate g-forces high enough to make a fighter pilot black out.

@[email protected] @[email protected] There are reasons that Aztec warriors thought they could be reincarnated as hummingbirds.
Combined, Gabon, Nigeria and the Republic of Congo are the largest suppliers of crude oil to Israel. @[email protected] reports on whether this might constitute support of genocide, and how African countries have limited ability to do anything, thanks to the power of western oil companies. “Economically and geopolitically we are at the bottom of the hierarchy, playing the same roles today as during colonization,” says Fadhel Kaboub, a Nairobi-based senior adviser at Power Shift Africa. “This takes away a lot of your sovereignty.”

Anti-immigrant rhetoric is part and parcel of some candidates’ campaigns in the U.S. election. @[email protected] shares this Arizona Mirror story about Trump and Harris’s different visions for the 11 million people who live in the United States without legal status.

Our @[email protected] sent out a newsletter this week, which they turned into this Flipboard Storyboard. It’s a fascinating look at who might win the “bro vote” in November, including stories from @Salon on Tim Walz’s normal-dad energy, @politico on the ever-widening gender gap, and GQ on the strange history of toxic masculinity.
