The big problem is that, as with most things American, there’s no such thing as “American roads.”

Even in a city like mine, roads can be maintained at the city level or the State level. Even the county sometimes has responsibility.

There really is no national standard or responsibility for road maintenance.

It was a big deal here when a major artery changed from state to city maintenance:
