The situation is this:

  • I use a bluetooth dongle ASUS UB400 on my PC, bluetooth version 4.0
  • My Sony wh-1000xm5 (bluetooth version 5.3) is not detected by the PC when I scan for new bluetooth devices
  • Another Anker Soundcore Q20 headphones are detected and working fine, like the mouse and a bluetooth speaker.
  • The Sony is detected by my android smartphones and working fine
  • I switched the dongle with another one with different brand, and all the devices were detected (and work fine) with the excepcion of the Sony.
  • Using Debian 12.8 and tested with bluetoothctl

Any advice is welcome.

You’re sure it’s in pairing mode? On my XM4s pairing mode is achieved by holding down the power button for a few seconds. It’ll say “pairing” in the headphones and blink red and blue IIRC.

Good point. I was confused because my other headphones when they are in pairing mode a blue light flashes repeatedly, but after reading the manual for the XM5 this means that are not connected not that they are in pairing mode, and as you said for pairing mode you have the press the power button for 5 seconds, the problem is that when I do that the headphones shutdown, May be there is an option to change that, I will check it out.

Press and hold the power button when they’re turned off. They should enter pairing mode a few seconds after powering on if you keep holding.
