In case you’d like a tldr;
Although it may be too early to discuss the reasons behind the current ozone concentrations, some researchers speculate that this year’s unusual ozone patterns could be associated with the eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai in January 2022.
Also
Claus concludes, “Based on the Montreal Protocol and the decrease of anthropogenic ozone-depleting substances, scientists currently predict that the global ozone layer will reach its normal state again by around 2050.”
If this is the true cause, I wonder if we’ll see a “Volcanic Winter” the next few years: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_winter
This phenomenon is the kind of shit that makes “climate change” controversial. Because temporary events can cool us down while the macro-pattern is increasing heat.
EDIT: It’s actually expected to cause warming because of the massive amounts of water it pushed into the stratosphere: https://climate.nasa.gov/news/3204/tonga-eruption-blasted-unprecedented-amount-of-water-into-stratosphere/
Those polar stratospheric clouds have surprised us before in spring, and chemistry up there can be counterintuitive, but seems this is not a long-term trend.
