By February there where videos of tourists in China going around with masks because everybody else was. A word spreads faster than a virus.

There’s also the possibility of pulling coverage of PREP/doxy/other medications designed to prevent STIs from insurance coverage. This would devastate the gay community, which is why they would do it.

I’ve been watching this really interesting older docuseries about an illegal alien who was adopted by a Kansan farmer. It really highlights the lengths the rich will go to when they feel justified in their own actions. At one point Trump literally suggested reducing reported Covid cases by just not testing. They genuinely think the important thing is not to talk about it.

The reason abusers and fascism and authoritarianism and evangelicals and the GOP all strongly overlap is because all those systems are centered around abuse and fear.
All those systems create the problem and then step in to be the hero that saves the day. They set a building on fire then rush in and save a few people to be a hero. And a LOT of people that aren’t paying attention only see them as they emerge from the building helping people. They don’t see that they started the fire in the first place, that multiple people died, that the building is now ruined. And that is now happening on a large scale on many levels to our country.
I think it is part of making government agencies ineffective to prove their ideology that these agencies should be abolished and replaced with private companies (or not at all). That way, they can say come election time, “See? Government can’t do these things well. We should eliminate these agencies.” Many people will forget they are also the reason the agencies are shitty.
They have tried this with underfunding them in the past mostly. This is a much more direct approach.
They’re taking things out from Hungary’s (and Russia’s) playbook. Your voters cannot fault you for something they don’t know about.

Yup, that’s what was implied in the first part. Depending on the genetics of a pandemic h5n1 though, the possibility does exist that current vaccines might be better than nothing at least. Even a 1% difference is huge on population scales.
From what I read it doesn’t cover h5n1 but being vaccinated against the other flu variants obviously prevents you getting both h5n1 and some other preventable illness at the same time.

Stopping new rules and stopping basic alerting are very different. I can see an administration wanting to review new rules. But stopping normal communication is extreme.

Even before this, The People’s CDC was doing better work than the regular CDC on covid. This and other stuff like it is what will guide us.
Funding is still an issue, but trust is something we maintain ourselves by individuals paying attention and speaking honestly.

The CDC did what they could with the information they had at the time. Yes, the pandemic was bad, but it was a pandemic. No shit it was bad. Could the CDC have handled it better? Sure. But could you imagine how much worse it would have been without it?

The whole “the cruelty is the point” thing is so foreign to me. It isn’t difficult to cause hardship with clean intentions. To cause intentional pain broadly and blindly just doesn’t make sense to me. And I can “devils advocate” and try to empathize fairly well (hard to know if that’s true without acting like a creeper).
