Seems like this is more of a candidate problem than a voter problem - Joe and Kamala were very aggressive to anti-genocide voters and protestors - Gov Shapiro even wanted them arrested
Vote shaming will not get these voters to your side, but you know what will - candidates who will listen
Emphatically correct based on everything I learn. I could never imagine changing my vote based on shaming and I don’t know why so many choose that tactic anyway, even after the thing is over.
This is why the aftermath of the election has been particularly frustrating to me - a LOT of comments are just shitting on Muslim voters and kind of acting happy that trump is so terrible - often ‘liberal’ voters.
What the heck? We have to keep the doors open and politicians have to get them through the doors
It’s also frustrating to spread the word and make sure everyone knows the consequences. And then with everyone 100% knowing the outcome, decided a fascist was the best choice. The guy who had a playbook out months in advance detailing his plans of terror and destruction. The guy that every time he opened his mouth spewed racism, Hitler praising, promises of being a dictator, conspiracy theories, and on and on. And people heard/saw that and were like, YEP!
The idea still blows my mind. And I’m not sure I’ll get to a point where I can understand why someone would sell us all out like that, and then still consider us on the same side.
It’s also frustrating to spread the word and make sure everyone knows the consequences
That’s the point that people are trying to make though. That’s the only thing democrats ran on. Everything we’ve done is great, everything is getting greater, if you’re not with us then things are going to go to hell.
That rings hollow when many people you know are NOT doing great, you do NOT feel anything improving and everything is getting slowly worse, oh and if you don’t vote for us you are gonna feel even worse we promise you.
The only way you could make a worse call to arms would be to just out and out shout “it’s hopeless let’s end it now!”

OK, not the message I got, but I guess it’s probably different depending on the media you consume. In saying that though, what part of voting for a fascist did you [or those not doing great] think would improve overall?

The issue I have here is that Trump was not new to politics this time around.
He ran in 2016 and won.
He gave tax breaks to the riches people of this country [1%], while enacting tariffs to drive up the cost of everything for the 99%.
He went after peoples health insurance with no plan on how to replace it, despite constantly saying it was easy [though his attempts were blocked].
Attacked earned benefits [which thankful was blocked also].
He hung out with former Grand Wizard of the KKK David Duke, and had dinner with proud white supremacist Nick Fuentes. He also said there was “very fine people on both sides” when white supremacists marched in Charlottesville, and eventually killed a counter-protester. He responded to BLM protests with great disgust, praising violence used against peaceful protesters. He took great delight in using tear gas and rubber bullets so he could do a photo-op outside a church where he held and upside-down Bible.
Then COVID came for us all. He purposefully ignored experts, made doctors the enemy, lied to millions about the dangers, pushed conspiracy theories. Millions died as a result.
A recession was made worse by ignoring COVID and the effects it would have on supply chains the world over, the work force, and the nations health [long COVID, mental health, etc.].
Upon losing the election he led an insurrection against the US capital, watching the events live from the White House.
A laundry list of people in Trump’s orbit were caught up in law suits involving everything from his fake electors, to the insurrection itself, to defamation.
Defamation: Trump 2x guilty, Rudy 1x guilty with several still awaiting trial, Fox News 1x guilty.
Classified documents: Trump and lawyers charged - saved by Supreme Court and tied up to run out the clock.
Insurrection: “Of the more than 1,265 individuals charged since Jan. 6, 2021, department prosecutors have secured more than 718 guilty pleas – including 213 who pleaded to felonies that include assaults on federal officers, obstructing law enforcement and seditious conspiracy.”
NY Election Interference [Falsifying Business Records] - Trump found guilty on all counts and with help of Supreme Court was able to run the clock out and only got the felonies on his record - no jail/probation time. His “fixer” Michael Cohenn served his sentence for this prior to Trump’s trial. Trump’s CFO Allen Weisselberg went to prison once because he wouldn’t flip, then got out and lied again, earning him an additional sentence at Rikers.
You then have the 2024 campaign:
He suggested he wanted generals like Hitler.
He doubled down on fallen military were “suckers”.
Hannibal Lecter [who isn’t real] was a great.
Admitted during his debate that he had no plan for health care still [almost 9yrs later - only “concepts of a plan”].
An assault on people of color, disabled, immigrants, women, LGBTQ+. Often referring to them as sub-human or vermin.
Denied knowing about Project 2025, but chose the guy that wrote the forward for the main authors book as his VP [Vance]. He also packed his administration with contributors knowing full well “the plan”.
And so, so, so much more.
All this is to say, what part of any of this wall of text would help someone hurting? What part of this hate would fix people not seeing an improvement to their quality of life? How would this make it easier for themselves or their neighbors? The guy didn’t come out of nowhere, people knew the kinda of terror he planned for all of us for 9+ years and for whatever reason chose Nazi over what probably would have been more “status quo”.
The issue I have here is that Trump was not new to politics this time around.
Giant wall of terrible things Trump has done.
… Yeah, I agree. As a matter of fact, it sounds exactly like " if you’re not with us then things are going to go to hell." or “if you don’t vote for us you are gonna feel even worse we promise you”, but a lot more verbose.
If you want to rally people to a cause, you need TWO THINGS. A thing you don’t want, and a thing that you do. Either a thing you will have, or a thing you have right now. If you don’t have that thing you want, then you don’t have a better of two options.
You just have a less hopeless of two options, and you shouldn’t be shocked that you didn’t draw a fighting force of people together like Mel Gibson in Braveheart.
So your saying people really need a “Mel Gibson” to compel them to not vote for a Hitler (and this is post actual Hitler so we already know the playbook)? The fact that it’s even a debate for people is unconscionable for me. How is allowing a man looking to harm a large section of the American population even a choice? How do you not vote against him just so that you can at least know you tried to save someone, even if you yourself feel helpless and without hope. You at least didn’t help a man that is going to harm so many.
No, they had a Scotland to fight for. A Scotland where they could have a home, a family, a community, where they could ask a doctor for help and that they could build in a general upward direction.
America nowadays has skyrocketing home costs, a kid who can’t leave your basement to make a family, record breaking loneliness, doctors who can’t help you even with insurance, and absolutely nothing implying that any of it will get better.
Defend this from the man who will make it hell, so that it will take longer for us to reach hell.
Such a powerful message to send the voters.
I’m sorry, I just think that the Democrats could’ve won so many more people with better messaging. I have no faith that they will have anything better come 2028. Assuming we still have a democracy come then.
in this case, i urge you to consider that it was Kamala and Biden who ‘sold us all out’, and not the voters.
it’s not easy, because people are really frustrating. but at the end of the day, if you put the blame on the people running vs the people voting - you’ll get 100% more traction with the people in the world.
i live in fucking MIssouri - it’s HARD to practice what i preach, so trust me on how difficult it is.
this is with much love to you friend, because i want us to be in a better world.
Get out of here with that both sides bullshit. If you voted for a Nazi you wanted a Nazi more than a working country, full stop. And those that did and are now somehow surprised he is doing exactly what he said he would are getting no sympathy from me, and they should be taking responsibility for the pain being waged against marginalized groups.
I suspect there’s a good portion of liberal voters who are above a certain level of wealth, and know they aren’t really affected by politics in more than superficial ways, and just sort of hate republicans for acting stupid, or, unfashionable, and see muslim voters as being unfashionable, because they failed to “fall in line”, as they explicitly state in their oft-repeated adage. Beyond that and maybe more understandably, probably a good proportion of them are people who don’t really know what they’re talking about, and are sort of, vaguely frustrated or terrified about the shit they keep seeing on CNN, or hearing about on their daily drive to work on NPR, unable to really tear themselves away from the political slop mill, where trump is kind of, notoriously good at just shoving a million things down the pipe.
I think a lot of these types can sort of be discounted out of hand, because the pipe is pushing such an overwhelming glut of content down their throats that they’ll probably never be convinced by anything you say almost ever. For every paragraph you punch out, you’re maybe gonna be counteracting like, a couple minute’s worth of propaganda, and you’re having to counteract like, eight hour’s worth of propaganda that they’re consuming on a daily basis.
I think mostly social media more broadly is engineered explicitly to facilitate this kind of like, using other people as punching bags, and venting explicitly at them, behavior. Even lemmy, which is just, designed exactly the same as reddit, but with a more open-source slant. This behavior where people use each other for rhetorical arguments rather than seeking to discuss things in good faith. More than that it’s sort of engineered to accompany the former propaganda apparatus. It’s the new media, same as the old media.

This is beyond voter shaming, though. This is asking what the fuck were they thinking.

Same experience here. It’s deeply unsettling.
