Love it or hate it - YouTube is still the largest and best video platform out there. It doesn’t matter how “good” any other platforms are if they don’t have the content and creators. I’m all for posting on other platforms in addition to YouTube, but you can’t just ignore something like YT.

Fair. You just don’t like it huh? I actually hate the fact I can’t add a custom thumbnail to my video without verifying my phone number first. Like wtf, man can’t have more than 2 channels these days…

            What makes you think that?

I just wanted to point out that many users on lemmy probably don’t have a google account for reasons very similar to those that made them come to the fediverse in the first place.

You know you can watch videos on youtube without being signed in, right?

I fully disagree with that statement.

In most of the world, nearly everyone has a smartphone. Within that, there are 2 main options - Apple, or one derived from Google’s Android. Within the latter, you run the stock OS, which effectively requires a Google account, or you can run a custom OS. The custom OS also requires a Google account for anything resembling the usual functionality of a smartphone.

I’m aware that De-Google movements are out there, but that’s why it’s such a big deal. It’s hard to run an Android-based device without a Google account and still have it do what you need/want. And while Lemmy’s user base probably has a higher percentage than average, it’s still going to be a low percentage.

I could totally be wrong, yeah. It was just an assumption I made, but even on Lemmy I spend my time in a pretty niche bubble. Who knows?

This just seems like a willfully dumb thing to think.

I was required to have a Google email for high school in some cases in the US, as some of my teachers would post projects and assignments on Google Docs.

This was before computers were basically a requirement in the classroom so I can only imagine what digital identity kids “need” nowadays for school.
