Plagiarism as a student was at minimum an F in the course and academic probation when I was attending university(~2010). Expulsion was always on the table. I do not see an issue holding those in higher positions in academia to a similar standard.

The guy NPR interviewed just ranted the entire time about how it was an attack on her as a person and that everyone in higher academia at Harvard as made mistakes this she did. He also avoided answering direct questions on the topic.

I’m thinking there are a lot of plaigarists at Harvard.

      Exactly right.

John Pelissero, a former interim college president who now works for the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics, said instances of plagiarism deserve to be evaluated individually and that it’s not always so cut and dried.

“You’re looking for whether there was intentionality to mislead or inappropriately borrow other people’s ideas in your work,” Pelissero said. “Or was there an honest mistake?”

Good luck using this excuse as an undergrad after making the same “mistake” dozens of times.

Dismissing the allegations because of who made them was always ad hominem. It’s also a pretty bad look to hold faculty and the president of the university to noticeably lower standards than the students.

From what I’ve read, she copied multiple things verbatim, or with tiny changes that would never have flown when I was in school to avoid plagiarism, nor that would seem to satisfy the standards in place at the time, much less now. I’d say that’s proven to the standard that would get students a 0 or other punishment, as reported by students from Havard in a recent school paper article. Hence my point that the issue to me isn’t what she did so much as the “rules for the but not for me” response from Harvard.

Of course, what I’d argue would be a better discussion is whether plagiarism (as defined in most schools now) is the huge issue academia makes it out to be. It seems like many (maybe most?) professors don’t think strict plagiarism is an issue, yet schools and colleges continue to use it as something they can “easily” check for via text scanning tools. I think the problem is how anal places have gotten over what they think constitutes plagiarism to be far less than is actually a problem.

And of course, I think this is actually all to get her on something for the horrible performance in front of Congress a la tax evasion for Al Capone rather than an actual moral panic about plagiarism.

I know a lot of higher ed humanities teachers at top 10 schools and students plagiarize all the time and usually the teachers don’t even report it to admin.

She plagiarized her entire career. She was so blatant she even copied the acknowledgement sections!

People doing shady things like that would be smart to avoid scrutiny.

Now she’s gone from the poster child for progress to the poster child for racial discrimination (positive).

Republican detractors have sought to gut funding for public universities

Sounds good to me. Why should they get taxpayer money and charge egregious tuition?

Arguably, it’s the parents that did it, not the educational institution. You’d have better results killing the rich than you would killing education.

Ivy League schooling is a four year adult daycare and networking camp to secure old money connections. There’s nothing educational about it. I wouldn’t be saying this if “conservatives” were coming after actually good-natured community college administrators, for example.

I’m not gonna argue with your take on those schools. You’re right.

But, if a professor at a “good-natured” community college plagiarized, they should be fired.

What are you basing this on? I have somewhat deep insight into one Ivy League school and can tell you much of it is quite rigorous, well beyond the local community colleges. This is based on family and friends that have gone to one or the other as well as some employees.

Or even resigning because they don’t want to be a distraction. Like treating the institution like its more important than the individual holding the office. What a concept.

What, all your friends and family already hate you so you just go online to spout bullshit?

It’s well known conservatives fucking hate being around each other because they’re all shit people so you go to normal spaces and stir shit up.

What’s your fuckin response to the shit you stirred up, pussy?

Ah the proud conservative. Tell me friend, how does it feel to be a champion of legalized pedophilia, aka child marraige? Does knowing you are directly responsible for children being raped, legally, because “its a religious tradition” get the engine going? How about the fact that it’s predominantly 60+ year old men “marrying” (to have sex with) young girls and in some cases with no lower age limit? Them proud republican traditions… from the people who have “think of the children” on speed dial. But they never wanted you to think of these children.

I’d be willing to bet you didn’t have a clue. Why? Cause your dumb ass is too busy “owning the libs” to bother looking at your party or institutions actions at any level of the government that you arent spoon fed by fox or other republican propaganda mills. Laughable, that’s how I see every conservative flinging of the term paedophile. It’s funny because your institutions are rife with it, yet you are unphased by the hypocrisy. The catholic church and its priests raping boys is a trope at this point. The Mormon church protects its rapists by changing legislation so they can functionally ignore their confessions instead of reporting to the police. Every other republican politician has a history of sexual deviance, many including children… with the base gasping “imperfect vessel” to hand wave away their disgraceful behavior while accusing their political enemies of the same without a shred of evidence. Straight up moral bankruptcy. Knuckledragging bigots don’t need no evidence to parrot their party’s political message.

Just like they didn’t need evidence to support an insurrection and try to overthrow our duly elected government. Lie to a republican enough, and they will believe anything. Questions like “out of 60 court cases why didn’t Trump present any tangible evidence the election was stolen” are just unimportant details when the party asked you to “fight like hell” to maintain their power. Gullible, traitorous lemmings, the lot of them. Watching the Republican party coalesce around these traitors and try to white wash their acts as “desperate patriotism” is just pathetic and disgraceful. Every person that attacked the capitol on January 6th deserve to hang; being a gullible moron doesn’t excuse one from the consequences of their actions. You support wannabe dictators at your own peril.

Overall, I can only guess how much spit you unknowingly consume in a year. Not nearly as much as you deserve, I imagine. You could try to be a better person, but then that would get in the way of “owning” the libs. The reality is you are so “owned” by your party day in and out, so much so you don’t even know they own you.
