I like helping people, and I think that due to my circumstances I would be able to understand more and be more empathetic towards the people I help once I (hopefully) complete my studies.

Is this called being a ‘social worker’ in English? If so, I wish you all the best! Social workers are quite mistreated and underpaid in the US despite playing such important roles in the community. I hope you find an org that actually cares about its social workers, and adequately supports you as you help others.
