RTA, it says right on the line and into the air defense identification zone, meaning they were intentionally trying to piss off Taiwan and by extension, Taiwan’s western allies. Needless posturing. Is it news? Not really. Does it have more nuance than you give it credit for? Yes.

The territory is contested. Meaning, China claims that this is their territory and they have a right to be there and the US claims it isn’t their territory and they don’t have a right to be there. The difference is, this is basically within eyesight from mainland China while US vessels that perform these same aggressive maneuvers are one third of a globe away from their home country.

I’m pretty sure “closer to” is a concept from geometry and not politics. I don’t need any additional sources to check my claim thanks.

Alright, it’s way closer to China then it is to the USA, why are there US fighter jets and battleships there at all? Pretty sure the half way point is somewhere past the Philippines.

I’m not familiar with the details but I would imagine it has something to do with the Taiwanese government being okay with it.

Do you support the US ceasing diplomatic relations with PRC in favour of ROC and going back to the time before Nixon made rapprochement?

If the PRC will call off diplomatic relations over something as simple as recognizing a country next to China, we need to be ready for that war anyway because that kind of gaslighting only expands if you play along.

I don’t believe China would go dark in response to us recognizing Taiwan. If they would do that over something so petty, we need to be treating them as a hostile, non-communicating entity anyway.

So basically, if we model China as willing to sever diplomatic relations over that, we should model them as already having severed diplomatic relations.

It’s not a petty matter at all, It’s not possible to formally recognise both countries. RoC has territorial claim over the entire Chinese mainland. The one China policy is the bedrock for every country’s diplomatic ties with China. Americans really are a people obsessed with war.
