One does not simply suggest changing a kernel line to help out a parsing tool.
No matter which side you’re on, I think we can all agree that there’s a special circle in hell reserved for people who don’t follow conventions.
I just use format on commit tools now. Everyone can have their own personal workspace, and the team repository of code is automatically standardized
Disclosure: The author is a tab person insofar as he has any idea what he’s doing.
This post was updated at 6:33 pm Eastern to fix some line-break issues in the Torvalds blockquote. The irony was duly noted. A better link regarding the Tabs Vs. Spaces debate was also swapped in.
I like this disclosure.
Good for him, tabs rock.
In this kind of debate, to people refer to tabs as actually entering the tab character, or to the use of tabs involving immediate replacement with a specified number of spaces?
For instance vscode allows the usage of the tab butting to enter 2 or 4 spaces when pressed, would that be considered tab or spaces?
Thats spaces.
That said, I do think a lot of newbies think it’s “Tabs”, which fuels a not-insignificant portion of this debate.
Definitely is a misconception. The video posted by another commentor (Silicon Valley clip) implies spaces is manually pressing space 4-8 times. Which we should all be able to agree is madness :)
I’ll just leave this here
lol. there has never been a soda spaces that have had a cult following. tab was aweful though.
