  • And if you look like you could be from the Middle East, so if you are Spanish, Italian, from the Balkans, Latin America or any other place where people aren’t pale as fuck, prepare to be insulted, threatened and sometimes violently attacked in the streets.

When I was 18, over 20 years ago, I spent 3 weeks in Southern Germany. As a white American it was the first time I experienced racism, though mild. I will never forget the look the family I was staying with gave me when I told them my last name was Italian. When the mother asked me, she was hopeful my last name was Spanish and visibly disappointed when I said Italian.

  • Start looking for tripped GFCI outlets.

If there is no power to the switch and the breaker didn’t trip there is likely a switch with GFCI on the mix.

Another possibility could be a bad breaker (assuming you don’t have actual fuses), check this by flipping the breaker off and back on. This could also help to identify other lights/outlets on the circuit. If there is a wiring problem, knowing what other devices are on the circuit could help you track the problem.

While not impossible, it is unlikely that a wire has been severed. It is possible that a wire came loose at another outlet or fixture in the circuit.

If there was a true short, the breaker would be tripped out fuse blown and it would continue to trip.

Problem exists between breaker and wall switch.

  • I vaped for quite a while. Got a bit addicted to the tinkering and the juice hunting. It can be a fun hobby which probably makes it a bad way to quit if you’re anything like me.

I worked myself down on the nicotine levels until I was at zero.

Relapsed back to cigarettes after not having vaped for a few months due to stress.

Finally stopped cold turkey. Didn’t go back to vaping just decided it was time.

    Things that ultimately helped:

    • Having a reason to quit that I could remind myself of daily as an affirmation.
    • My partner was also quitting, I needed her to stop and needed to be there to support her efforts.

If I was going to do it again, I’d probably look into Fum or something similar. Probably add some nicotine gum at the start to ease the chemical addiction.

  • Immigration is complicated.

    My summary:

    • In 2019 the Trump administration conducted raids on poultry processing plants in Mississippi.
    • Nearly 700 workers were detained.
    • An estimated 290 were deported.
    • Lawyers were able to use asylum laws and ties to the community to get most workers legal status.
    • One DA charged 4 managers with crimes related to harboring aliens.
    • 3 were given probation and 1 had the charges dropped.
    • Despite saying this was just the beginning of holding employers accountable, the prosecutor is now in private practice and no other charges have been pursued.
    • Agents help get undocumented workers jobs in these factories, arranging papers and employment. They of course take a cut of the workers wages.
    • The factories rely on these workers because they are willing to do this difficult and dangerous work.
    • The community depends on these workers. One grocery store owner even said that he felt the drop in business after the raids.

    My opinion:

I’ve always felt that if we as a nation were serious about illegal workers that we should go after the employers. E-verify is a thing, there is no excuse other than it is better for the business. But this is not about protecting American jobs, this is about optics. Politicians use migrant workers as a target to rile up their base. Meanwhile these same politicians take money from business owners who depend on these workers for sustained profits.

We are not serious about enforcing these laws. This is a wedge issue to divide.

Before we can go after employers, we need a pathway to legal status for migrant workers and we need to make employers part of the process. This should be something that can be done quickly and easily. You want to hire migrant workers? Obtain papers for them, pay them fairly, and pay payroll taxes. Then we go after employers who try to subvert the law.

Many industries depend on migrant labor. Many of the employers that depend on it, exploit it. Stop demonizing the “others”.

Also worth noting that there are many migrant workers with legal status that contribute to SSI and will never draw from that pool because they will not become citizens. This is how we keep these much needed programs sustainable.
