At what point was this a stalemate? The eventual outcome was obvious about 2 weeks in. I remember thinking that surely Russia’s capacity to actually do the production needed for this war was more important than American financial dominance, but I kept hearing otherwise from all of the news. I was shocked to see that I was clearly right and I was being lied to, again.

This happens to me all of the time. It’s like when the news kept telling me that any day now the ghettos of Caracas would rise up and demand the privatization of Venezuela’s oil fields. I kept thinking it didn’t make any sense and I must be missing something. Turns out I was right again.

I get it. I always regarded Besarabia as having kinda fuzzy borders. My great grandfather was a jew that grew up in a town next to the Dniester River, on the Moldovan side (north of Pridniestrovia), but I’m pretty sure I had a bunch of Jewish ancestors on the Ukraine side as well. I think of them all as Besarabian jews and just kind of squint at Moldova as approximate/close enough Besarabia. I never thought of the exact border location’s eventual consequences for the more Russian facing slavs and Moldovans in the east. Interesting.

You’re far closer to this area than I am, but I always considered Besarabia to basically be the area that is now Moldova. Maybe I’m misunderstanding you.

When you say freedom, what do you mean? Freedom to do what? You’re talking about a place that under capitalist restoration became the poorest country in Europe and (as is tradition) uses ethnic violence to divide its working class that might otherwise kill its rulers. I’m thinking a lot of the population might not feel they actually have the freedom to actually do a whole lot. Some of them seem to want the freedom to continue living, or the freedom to not fight in a NATO proxy war, but you don’t seem to care about those freedoms. So, again, what are you talking about?

I know an ethnic jew born in Kiev. She survived the holocaust, and from her telling lived a pretty good life and raised a family in the USSR. As the Soviet Union was collapsing and antisemitism was increasing she moved with her family to Chicago. She traveled back to Russia several times, but never returned to Ukraine, which I think about a lot. Who wants to survive the holocaust and then still have to live alongside these nationalist shitheads, just waiting for it to happen again.

Absolutely true. I’d still say going through this whole charade was immature and cowardly. They could just say that China poses a longterm threat to the American bourgeoisie, and if the American bourgeoisie suffer, no one can stop them from taking down a lot of American workers with them.

For me, the greater takeaway was that none of our political leadership had the maturity or courage to say “we’ve been operating with some bullshit narratives, some of that is our fault, I know the news loves to stir up a good frenzy but this is just a weather balloon.”

Instead, rather than challenge people to stop and think, they spent a week launching missiles at weather balloons. Truly jaw dropping (I’m desensitized to all of the violence they normally do). I’m a communist, so by definition I’m not one of the adults in the room, but at least I’m adult enough to tell the truth when I fuck up at work and just fix it.
