  • Mark my words. Don’t ever use SATA to USB for anything other than (temporary) access to non critical preexisting data. I swear to god if I had a dollar for every time USB has screwed me over trying to simplify working with customers’ (and my own) drives. Whenever it comes to anything more advanced than data level access USB just doesn’t seem to offer the necessary utilities. Whether this is rooted in software, hardware or both I don’t know.

All I know is that you cannot realistically use USB to for example carbon copy one drive to another. It may end up working, it may throw errors letting you know that it failed, it may only seem to have worked in the end. It’s hard for me to imagine that with all the individual devices I’ve gone through that this is somehow down to the parts and that somewhere out there would be something better that actually makes this work. It really does feel like whoever came up with the controlling circuits used for USB to SATA conversion industry-wide just didn’t do a good enough job to implement everything in a way that makes it wholly transparent from the view of the operating system.

TL;DR If you want to use SATA as intended you need SATA all the way to the motherboard.

tbh I often ask myself why eSATA fell by the wayside. USB just isn’t up to these tasks in my experience.

  • I don’t disagree with you that this is a potential motive. I just also feel that if we as the “reasonable” left see these motives in everyone and everything that (for whatever correlative reason) elicits right wing talking points we’re just solidifying the division that prevents us from finding common ground on pretty much anything besides Israel these days.

There is plenty evidence for this person being completely in their own bubble. They lost their job, now they’re doubling down on whatever cuckoo world view they managed to craft for themselves up to that point. My point being that while we’re definitely not obligated to understand or extend an olive branch as they say, we must never fail to see the humanity in others, whether allied or opposed.

There is no humanity in terms like The Daily Wire or Fox News, so once we draw that connection we automatically dehumanize actual real life human beings, which then puts us exactly on the same level as “them” if you get what I’m saying. They call us fascist marxists (whatever that means) and we call them Fox News bootlickers. Rinse and repeat.

  • The fediverse is such an interesting new human experiment (and I’m just saying this to you specifically since I don’t expect this comment to make it past the moderators either). I was going in expecting reddit except not morally bankrupt, yet what you find are numerous bubbles that their respective communities use to shield themselves from whatever it is that they (for whatever arguably rationalizable reason) cannot accept to penetrate the safe space.

I truly feel for the emotions OP experiences and has outlined. I was just trying to level with them from an outside perspective and it is truly sad that there seems to be absolutely no platform left on the internet (if there ever was one) where one can be guaranteed to find community that puts the commune and the upkeep of its unity before any agenda or collective emotional guidance.

  • You’re obviously on edge when your entire (self-assigned) identity is about crafting a reality where being a traditional housewife (and mother) with no husband in sight isn’t a complete contradiction. She badmouths the partners of her friends for not being that traditional breadwinner she herself doesn’t have and probably never will have to support her either.

I don’t think she’s acting, she’s just completely lost in her search for a life she would deem worth living. And that’s all completely ignoring the racist aspects of it all. But I think that is also good “evidence” for it being real. You don’t fabricate racism. At least I couldn’t think of any motivation to do so. There’s subtler ways to dogwhistle yourself into the good graces of the neofascist circus on the right.

  • I mean yea sure, those are the 2 most relevant data collectors to most people. But as much as you can say about Apple’s anti-consumer practices, spying on its customers or letting anyone else spy on their customers isn’t something they can be accused of.

It’s still a closed source ecosystem so you have to take their word for it, and you better assume that their analytics game is the best in the business so you are definitely feeding them (anonymized) research data there.

However the point I’m trying to make is that if you aren’t a tech-savvy user (of which there are many) who just wants a solution that works then there isn’t really another option if you want your privacy respected. Google don’t respect your privacy and Microsoft can’t offer big picture solutions that just work with no fuss.

  • I share your optimism but not because I put my faith in the guys (not) pushing the button. Putin at his core and in terms of where he’s coming from is a small time FSB thug who made it too big for his own good. Perpetualizing corruption to keep himself in power and amassing enormous wealth at the cost of his people was fun for about one and a half decades. What does a kid do when it gets bored of its newest toy? It demands more of course. There is no nuclear option because little Vladimir knows at that point his days of demanding more will be counted. No more backing from big brother Xi. And all the reason for NATO to actually step in.

Some draw the analogy that you never know what a cornered Pitbull is gonna do but I don’t see that being applicable. His recent job reassignments show that he does not feel safe in his position as de-facto dictator anymore. He is much more worried for his domestic survival right now than anything going down on the international stage. He can’t nuke his own mutineers thus he needs to keep everyone in rotation so their levels of influence don’t get out of hand.

I can’t tell you what endgame there is left for Vladolf Putler. The only way onward is to keep the war going, which probably will require a full transition to a wartime economy sooner than later, but he probably doesn’t want that toll on the Russian people. Nuclear weapons would mean the opposite of keeping the war of attrition going and he knows that.

  • Look. You can’t have it both ways. You can either be the “i use arch (and so should everybody else) btw” guy or you can be dumbfounded by people accusing you of being the “i use arch (and so should everybody else) btw” guy. If you do both (in succession I guess) you’re just a parody of your own pro-FOSS message.

I know I’m probably opening another can of worms by saying this but I’m an absolute privacy advocate. And guess what? I use multiple Windows-installations as part of my day-to-day. Yes I do want that number to migrate towards zero but so far, especially when it comes to laptops (and more so laptops with multiple GPUs) I just never saw any appeal in crippling my own experience just for the sake of subjective “freedom”.

So now imagine a person like me trying to look for help setting up a Pi-hole installation for the sake of privacy. In comes the evangelical “If you actually truly care about your privacy, why are you using Windows?” Sound familiar? How about helpful (in terms of getting someone closer to a Pi-hole installation)?

  • Said like a person that doesn’t want to “argue till the end of the universe”. Maybe just take the hint once there’s multiple people trying to politely tell you the same thing? Prove that you’re not just good at fortifying the walls around your bubble. Criticism is rarely meant to attack us. Nobody is accusing you of a crime. I know it’s hard to take that step back from one’s own perspective.

Again, just because something works for you doesn’t mean you have to be evangelical about it. Don’t try to be the “I use arch btw” meme for real.
