Aren’t spell ingredients made meaningless by the focus/holy symbol/whatever that casting classes get automatically? The only time I could see them being needed is if the character loses those items, an NPC without a focus, or a newly multiclassed character.

Personally I would prefer a lower material cost for spells but no focus/holy symbol/whatever. Something that functions more like arrows/crossbow bolts, so different types of magic consume different types of less than common items that can be bought at magic shops or looted of magic using opponents. At least that way you can run out, and the cost can scale in a way that is more intuitive for more powerful spells.

I think some ridiculously poweful spells should still have a high barrier in terms of materials. That way a character’s individual quest could be to gather these rare materials that could elevate them to godhood, change something from their past etc.

  • My secret hope, unrelated to streaming services, is that people start releasing some sort of analogue tape format like VHS or Betamax, or even one of those, paired with a high quality digital download for movies.

I envision it working similar to the vinyl resurgence. A digital download for modern devices and streaming, paired with a fundamentally different form of media for a different experience.

Of course I know that it won’t happen. I just like analogue tech.

This is a big issue. I’ve said it before, but so many people think they know what Kirk and TOS are, and are wrong about it. It isn’t pure ham and Kirk sleeping with the galaxy. It’s tense, it’s deep, it’s ahead of its time and ahead of a lot of current shows as well. The chemistry between Kirk, Spock and Bones really shines, and there is a real sense of the unknown. Remember that the reruns of TOS are what drove demand for TNG in the first place.

This isn’t to say that people aren’t allowed to not like TOS, of course some people won’t. I just think people and especially trek fans do themselves a disservice by not giving it a good go.

    Standard TOS defence rant over.

I’ve realised this recently. I spent close to 2 grand (Australian) on a new PC a few years ago, with a 1440p monitor, and I generally play isometric RPGs and metroidvanias…

I do enjoy some high-fidelitt games, especially stuff like Alien Isolation and the Metro series, but I think I don’t need to spend so much next time.
