The law doesn’t matter when the punishment for breaking it cost less than the profits they make by breaking it. Even better when the punishment is never even enforced at all.

11·4 days agoLike, you’re telling me if you saw a guy with that tattoo in the gym the first thing that comes to mind is not “damn, that looks like some Nazi shit”?
Like, I’m not saying people need to know the exact symbol and name. But, come on, you watch one WW2 documentary and you should be able to put that together. That shit was all over.

Edit: I’m sorry. Maybe the average person is just really stupid. But it’s literally the second symbol listed on the Nazi Symbolism Wikipedia. First is the Swastika. Is the average person really that ignorant of history?

Like, how do you define it? Is it just through an appeal to authorities or governments that declare them as such?
Or do you have specific acts you would define as terrorist?

33·5 days agoI’ve been drunk as fuck for most weekends of my life. Never once did I find myself getting a Nazi tattoo to celebrate my service killing brown people in Iraq. Idk. Maybe have a higher standard for a representative than you would some random reddit comment?
Like, this isn’t a personal friend you’re trying to help explain the personal struggles of to another friend. This is a representative that will influence the lives of thousands to potentially millions of people. Maybe have a higher standard for them to reach than you would a drunk idiot in a bar.
That’s why he’s a “pass” for me. I don’t live in Maine. I don’t have any interest in helping or promoting him. Maybe if I was in Maine I’d have a bit more patience.
But I am not gonna waste my time defending or promoting a dude with a Nazi tattoo just because he said “fight the oligarchs” like it’s a copy pasta from Sanders to get voters.

Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•Graham Platner: I Never Worked for Blackwater.
51·5 days agoAgreed. It doesn’t have to be this big conversation about “letting people change”. That’s fine for a personal friend I’m trying to help grow. We’re talking about a politician that will influence the lives of thousands to millions of people. Yeah. I’ll have a higher standard and much more doubt. It’s that simple.

3·5 days agoI don’t judge my policians with the same criteria that I would a personal friend. I think this is a problem with modern social media and media in general. It’s given people the delusion that we should consider political figures by the same means we do our friends.
If I want to help a personal friend overcome their racism and bigotry. I will make that decision because I have a personal connection to them that I can influence.
We’re talking about a representative though. Why would I give benefit of the doubt to someone ill literally never sit down with?

77·6 days agoOur democratic process in the US has about as much power as the monarchy does in the UK.
In the UK they bring out an old white guy with a crown and all play make believe.
In the US we bring out an old white guy, vote, and make believe that what we did changed something.

Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•Graham Platner said he joined the marines to kill people, and had an excellent experience doing so.
63·6 days agoThe people dumb enough to believe this guy are the exact people within the Democratic party that they are trying to keep believing in electoral politics. His campaign is here to keep people passively accepting the failures of the Democratic party as they are distracted by the shapes and colors of resistance without any material goals for change.
If you’re going a little crazy wondering how people are falling for this very obvious grifter it’s because his messaging is not for you.
It’s like those emails from the “Nigerian Prince” with all the misspellings asking you to send them $5000 in eBay gift cards. It’s not because the scammers are being stupid. They are prefiltering anyone that replies so that they are a perfect target for the scam. Anyone smart enough is automatically going to ignore it.
So, not only does this grift give dumb people false hope in electoral politics as fascism takes control. It also leaves Liberals frustrated with Leftist for rightfully criticizing these war mongering racist. Because liberals can’t actually imagine a world in which there is anything else they could do but “vote harder”.
All while the fascist are proudly boasting about the ways they will rig the elections. Can we stop wasting our time talking about this idiot?

Palestine@lemmy.ml•“Baseless and fabricated”: Hamas rejects US claims of aid truck looting in Gaza
71·6 days agoThe fact that the “looting” thing is still used as a reason to not deliver aid is insane.
Like, is Hamas drinking baby formula? And if they are, wouldn’t the solution be to overwhelm the area with aid to ensure some of the aid gets through to starving babies?
Like, the insanity that this narrative is still going on.
I guess what’s happening is Hamas is using the baby formula to confuse the IDF into thinking they are babies. The IDF loves killing babies and of course goes to target them. But, “oh no! The baby is actually Hamas!” And the IDF soldier is killed. It’s really big brain work being done here by Hamas.

News@lemmy.world•Stephen Miller's wife threatens political commentator with deportation during debate
171·8 days agoToo many people online love to use “ad hominem” as a defense when someone uses language like: “you’re stupid and here is why…”
Not saying that’s what’s done here. It’s not. I just feel like the only time I see people use “logical fallacies” like this is incorrectly.
Ad hominem is NOT when someone insults someone they are arguing with. It’s when they use the insult or personal attack as a REASON for why something is wrong.
The extreme example being: “Hitler says being a vegetarian is good. But Hitler was a fucking Nazi.”
It’s implying the character flaws of the individual are associated with the subject of debate. It’s often used in tandem with the Strawman Fallacy to both create doubt in the character of your opponent as well as mischaracterize what your opponent is arguing so it is easily defeated.
She constantly strawmans here by invoking any criticism towards Israel as being instead on “Jews”. Which, maybe worked two years ago. But Zionist are sniffing their own farts at this point. The only people that believe that anymore are other Zionist.

Yeah. You can’t really deliver justice in this situation. There is unfortunately, no true restorative form of justice that exists for murder. But I agree. Any material improvement that can be made to the childrens lives should be.
