Not that related, but thought I’d share regardless:

In my experience, no legislation on trans issues is often better than legislation.

Where I live (Poland), there is pretty much zero friction for one to get trans healthcare through the healthcare system (that wouldn’t be felt by a cis person seeking the same procedures/medicine). You need to change your gender through a court, but the only requirement is that you aren’t married (since there is no gay marriage). And all that in a country under right wing governments for the last 17 years and with anti-lgbt zones.

Could things get better? Yeah, self ID would be nice, and in general LBGT related laws could be passed (again, more of lack thereof, not opposing legislation, though legal gay marriage would require amending the constitution) and protection against discrimination could be enforced better but aside from those things? Yeah its fine.

Just let doctors do their thing and its often good enough. And also bad legislation < no legislation (see the German self ID law situation rn)

    • Well i come from India and here histrically and culturally a third gender is recognised ( generally trans people) , but on top of that the court allowed self ID of gender too in a judgement, however our right wing govt brought a legislation that only a doctor can asses your gender !

Unfortunately, protection from discrimination is usually a big one. While we live in a world where people with capital have so much power, just the right to discriminate is enough to totally screw minorities over in housing, jobs, healthcare, entering shops, getting basic services, etc.
