I kinda regret my username, but I’ve been here 3 years so it’s stuck. Hi everyone. I lurked around on the old subreddit, but never posted anything. I was always too shy since everyone seemed so high energy and more interesting than me. But then I came here and learned y’all are super nice and helpful. Most pleasant internet community I’ve ever been a part of, including all the way back to the IRC days. About me:
I’m nonbinary and I’ve been calling myself a communist since the Iraq War. I try to stay well read but I get lazy about it sometimes. I come from a deeply racist, reactionary small town in America and it’s liberating to talk about how I escaped all of that. Sometimes I tell y’all stories about my family and how bad they can get, like one cousin is in the Klan, another is an Ayn Rand worshiping small business guy who keeps getting caught doing wage theft.
I’m an amateur musician/producer and tinker with electronics. I play guitar, flute, I fiddle with modular synths, sampling, etc. I read a lot, I really like horror and magical realism. I like Jorge Luis Borges a lot even though he was a bit of a liberal. I play a lot of video games, I have a soft spot for Touhou, Yakuza, Silent Hill, and early 90s point and click games (Sam and Max especially).
I really like movies too, especially really surreal artsy stuff from directors like David Lynch, Jodorosky, Tartovksy, Suzan Pitt.
Thanks everyone for tolerating me when I get mopey or aggressive sometimes. I sometimes feel like I’m annoying here but everyone’s super cool. Hope I can spend more time with everyone and continue to learn stuff.
Welcome! Hope you enjoy it here.
Did you know you can use ScummVM to play a lot of point and click games like Sam and Max on your phone?
Yeah! I have a cool little Shenzhen handheld (Retroid pocket flip) and recently played through The Labyrinth of Time using ScummVM. It’s so cool! That game is an absolute trip by the way.
I love the power of emulation. Every few years I go through a phase where I re-configure all my emulators and roms and stuff, just to get everything perfect. Tinkering around is half the fun lol
Would you recommend it to a beginner when it comes to point and click games? I’ve been debating on playing I Have No Mouth But I Must Scream as well.
My fear is it would be like some games where it turns into find “a needle in a haystack simulator”.
I’m a big fan of the handheld emulator scene to. I get the fun of tinkering and setting up custom firmware
The Labyrinth of Time is kinda simple in terms of puzzles actually. No real intense puzzles that I remember, everything’s mostly straightforward. It gets kind of tedious too, with a lot of parts being simple “find the exit” mazes. But the music and graphics are top notch. A lot of attention went into the presentation and it’s phenomenal. Really dreamlike environments, really varied, and neat references to Greek mythology.
My only recommendation for I Have No Mouth is that if you play it blind, keep in mind that the game is based around testing your morality. Don’t play it like a traditional adventure game, like how you’ll click every thing on screen to make something happen. There are multiple ways of solving the puzzles, some of which involve immoral things like causing pain to others, stealing food, etc. Doing the immoral things makes your characters feel worse about themselves and can end the game prematurely. You have to help the characters overcome their flaws to reach the final area. The game doesn’t really communicate this, but I’ve always found it really neat.
Hi axont! Fwiw I think the through serendipity or luck or whatever it’s called, your name came out well! I like your taste in games :)
Thank you! I try to favor novelty in my taste in games. I like stuff that puts a lot of emphasis on the presentation.
