I feel like it leans more into the latter as a kind of tech industry comedy. It stars Rob McElhenney who played Mac in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and I feel like a lot of the humor his character adds is present in Mythic Quest.
I wanted to share this because I was pleasantly surprised by Mythic Quest and I feel like other people who are looking for a lighthearted comedy to watch might enjoy it.
meh, it’s like the watered down splenda of neither.
Agree, I watched it and it was good enough to get to the end, but it’s nothing stand out, especially compared to IASIP and silicon valley.
Yeah I mean it was fine but missing the spark of both those shows.
Yeah I’ve started it because of this post and I like it because it has all the ingredients for me (office life I can laugh at now that I’m out of it, MMORPG to relive my glory days from WoW, great actors I love, etc), but it’s definitely missing the special sauce that made these two other shows much more special, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly though.
I like it. It’s generally a decent workplace comedy, kind of a Silicon Valley with the edges filed down (and occasionally the serial numbers filed off), and then every once in a while they hit you with some awesome writing, though it’s perhaps telling that two of their strongest episodes (s1 and s2 stand-alones) have absolutely no one from the regular cast, and the s2 one has some great work from Silicon Valley’s Josh Brener. I gather people actually in game development don’t find that aspect very realistic.
I wouldn’t subscribe to Apple TV for it, but it’s worth checking out. I do think the shine is off the rose with man-child tech entrepreneurs since the show was first developed, though.
man-child tech entrepreneurs
I was watching it for Poppy Lee.
Fair, and Charlotte Nicdao deserves more parts in bigger projects, but Ian is definitely, on net, a character we’re supposed to root for while many of his real world inspirations are… not.
To be honest the first time I watched S1, I sort of read him as more of a deuteragonist, he’s so ridiculous. I only really warmed to him once Poppy does.
There are so many characters with preposterous personalities - him, CW, Brad… for me Poppy’s trajectory is the A plot and the testers are the main B plot.
That doesn’t mean it’s what the writers necessarily intended, though.
Well damn, it’s on Apple TV, the one service I don’t have.
arr…?

Or stream for free on stremio
Also David Hornsby, aka Rickety Cricket. He’s a writer and executive producer for both Mythic Quest and Sunny.
Yeah that’s a solid rec.
If you’re watching it for the first time make sure you watch the 2 special episodes between S1 and S2; it really adds to it.
I recently tried to get a boomer uncle into IASIP and started with episode 1. Don’t be like me. Second try was with my aunt and her husband and “Hundred Dollar Baby”. Jackpot. They stayed for another episode which was of course “Sweet Dee has a heart attack”.
I hate ‘Sunny’ but like this show. For the other dozen people who can’t stand ‘Sunny’.
Edit: I also love Silicon Valley
What do you like about Mythic Quest and dislike about IASIP?
There’s actual likable characters in Mythic Quest. People I can root for and empathize with.
Everyone in Sunny is an irredeemable sociopath. I know that’s the point, but shows/movies that are only about those kind of people aren’t my cup of tea. I passionately love the balet episode, however. 95% the dance scene, but still :]
It’s interesting because MQ is definitely still working specifically with severely flawed characters, but it also goes out of its way to make them feel redeemable in a way, too. At times it comes off as a bit contrived or phony, but I think it works for the tone of the show overall.
It took me a while to adjust to iasip. It’s similar writing but iasip has a plot requirement of the characters getting in their own way which leads to unsatisfying resolutions. And there’s a lot more yelling. Megan gatz is awesome
I just caught up on this series and I enjoyed it quite a lot. I was particularly struck by how disparate it is in seasons 2 and 3, like it’s trying to be several distinct shows/stories in one. While that’s usually a bad characteristic, I think MQ manages to pull it off, which is cool. Overall it’s a good show, and pretty unique, which is hard to come by.
Gross Apple TV… What is used for torrents these days? Been a while…
I like kodi with the crew
Got this show off of 1337x
Showrss.info is what I’ve been using for years. Rarbg is also still around via various domains.

It’s Apple…not a chance in hell
Time to hoist the flag
!I just started watching this! I got to the episode with CWs backstory and him being a fraud is something i never saw coming, at the same time i feel bad for him!<
My dude, use >!spoiler tags!<.
Oh shit yeah
Thanks for the recommendation, but let me ask you something, since I’ve never watched any of these shows. Why would anyone want to watch them? What’s something generic between them that make them “special”? I guess I avoided these shows because I kinda hate corporate culture and usually dislike geek stuff by TV writers, except that Community show. Is there something for me?
There’s literally no way we can answer this, we don’t know your tastes or what you like. Why would anyone want to watch them? Because we like them, simple as that. Your tastes are not everyone’s tastes.
If you don’t like something, cool, move on. Don’t sit there and think that others are wrong for liking it though.
If you want to try it, then try it. Otherwise, move along.
I think he’s more pointing out that the dissimilarity between the two shows makes the comparison meaningless and brings up more questions than anything.
It’s like saying “If you like mangos and books about sailing, then you NEED to check out this anime about chess!”
I’m not telling you my tastes because I want to know what other people like about these shows. Don’t even know why you assume I don’t like them. Here’s an idea, if you don’t like my questions, move on and save yourself the hassle.
It’s always sunny is a comedy about a group of inept people running a bar in Philadelphia. It’s pretty witty and subversive. Also the actors are the show runners so it doesn’t have the corporate feel. I didn’t know anything about the other ones.
Sounds good. That bit about the actors being the showrunners could be controversial but pikes my interest. I’ll try it, thanks.
No.
Thanks OP! I utterly hate those shows. So I’m bound to hate this one too. What an easy decision!
Um…. Filibuster
Okay ill bite, why do you hate its always sunny?
For me, the secondhand embarrassment is too much. Love Silicon Valley though!
Have you watched Curb Your Enthusiasm?
I feel like it’s significantly worse for that
Or the original UK office.
The IT crowd is one of the worst I know
Had to pause midway through almost every episode to get over the embarrassment
I liked the title original title “Jerks” much better. When you understand its supposed to be like “Friends” if they were all jerks instead, it makes more sense.
I don’t like watching a show about bad people, nor do I like watching bad things happen to people, whether they’re bad or not. I like the occasional clip like kitten mittens, but the rest of the show is not my bag.
I also liked Silicon Valley though
Just a bunch of folks being utter jerks for no reason? The 5 episodes I watched scarred me enough to want to never go back. To me, it’s a crass show. But if you enjoy it, good for you!
That’s fair, I enjoy watching them act like jerks and then getting their comeuppance for being jerks.
