Swift codes are used for international banking. Not every bank has a code. Unless you transfer money internationally then you will never use it. Most Americans use western union or we have other options. Honestly it is for companies more so.
Also, if you do shady stuff, banks will kick you out of the swift codes. That would be the main reason to create their own.
