For me there’s a bit of a network effect where the polycule sprawls out into the distance. Partners have partners who have partners.
But for disconnected folks, it’s mostly been tinder (yuck), and a local meetup.

You can change your distance limit setting
I know. It’s set to 5 miles. I just checked. Five recommendations in and it recommended me someone in NJ. Double checked the map and that’s about 20 miles from here.
The distance limit seems more like a suggestion.
