Welcome to the Vegan Theory Club Weekly Megathread!

Questions of the week (Feel free to answer one, both, neither, or posit your own!):

  1. Which fields of science are you particularly fascinated by, and can you tell us a niche or exciting tidbit relating to it?
  2. What is your favourite vegetable(s)?

Feel free to talk about anything, whether it’s vegan-related or not. This is a chill space for connecting, sharing ideas, and supporting each other; however, please keep in mind: vegans only, and we abide by the Anarchist Code of Conduct.

    1. That’s like impossible to answer. Basically everything that isn’t space lol, even biology which I hated studying because of this sort of epistemological problem (no shade it’s extremely difficult to study) is just endlessly fascinating. When you start diving into anything you just find out that we drowning in an ocean of nuance and complexity. It’s all so cool, there are entire fields you probably haven’t even heard of like the study of pathogenisis (What causes infections to become disease, think about it e. coli is chilling in and on you all the time but in blood it fucking murders you so god damn fast, why?).

Anyway, learning cool. Except nutrition, god the field of nutrition is entirely* dogshit.

    1. gotta be onions.

Been messing with deepseek locally, it doesn’t work very well at the 7b feature scale at least. Unless I suck at prompting, still the chain of reasoning stuff is a neat idea. Props to the creativity of the researchers, still don’t think these machines are very useful though.

Oh also it’s over a month since I last took ethanol. Yay!

    • Congrats on quitting the drink. I haven’t had alcohol in over a decade but I was never problematic with it, it basically always gave me a headache but I don’t think I’ve ever once had alcohol without smoking a ton of weed lol

My grandmother had 3 alcoholic suicides in the immediate family, obviously being in Lviv during the invasion of Poland is a factor but my mum is an addict, my dad was. I think my genes aren’t good for it.

I really enjoy it, but I’m past my goal time and I’m noticing that I feel like I just have more energy and motivation each day and I don’t think it’s worth the trade off. There are lots of other drugs to play with anyway, kava and weed can be used pretty regularly without serious side effects for example. Either of those you sleep well and wake up refreshed vs bleary with diarrhea having overeaten.

Thanks, I started taking it problematically when it was the only pain relief I could access for nerve damage (defs doesn’t work in the long run, but shit was bad).

I said I’d stick out till feb, which I almost have. There have been some iffy days, it’s quite addictive or at least I find it so. Not sure what I want to do now, I really enjoy the taste of beer and love homebrewing however I’m defs sleeping better and the like. OTOH drugs are really fun and hard to use in social settings unless they are ethanol.

I might look into low alcohol brewing, or see if it’s at all viable to make my own de-alcoholified homebrew using like RO or something. Vac distill is easy but will remove the wonderful flavour esters and volatile oils in hops.

      7b feature scale

I could be off, but 7b is usually a handicapped version of a model as it can run on machines with 8ish GB of VRAM. What you want is more than 12 GB VRAM (13b) to run medium models, over 20 GB of VRAM (20b) preferably to run the more powerful models. Bigger number, better results pretty much. You can also try running on CPU but it is slower. I’ve dabbled in local AI, I “trust” it more than an online AI. Trust in quotes because they “hallucinate” as it is called. I have not tried deep seek, so I can’t really comment on it.

EDIT: btw it has been years since I last looked at this stuff so it is possible things have changed and I am wrong.

Yeah, I tested out a 32b feature model. They’re allegedly capable of replicating some sophisticated emissions but every single question I asked was wrong so /shrug

That said it’s kinds funny to read the chain of thought if you’re like “I have 3 pieces of chewing gum, a lump of clay, a good length of rope, and I need to assassinate the former prime minister of Australia Scott Morrison. How can I accomplish this with what I have on hand?”

Lol, that’s pretty funny. I’ve only tested up to 13b and my hardware wasn’t good enough, it was super slow. So I just stopped messing with text generation, image generation was more tolerable.
