I actually don’t like the upvote / downvote system. It can manipulate users into posting comments that are generally thought to be more accepted for fear of getting downvoted otherwise.

I’m fine with it working under the hood and ranking comments based on the numbers, but the fact that everyone can see it all makes it more like an echo chamber.

Personally I only upvote comments that I really, really enjoy or replies that are on topic and constructive. Downvotes are for comments that are confidently incorrect, rude or nonsensical.

Anything in between I just don’t vote on it. At least theres no “karma” that’s linked with your profile on here. That would make it a game of chasing numbers like other sites.

Maybe fear was too big of a word, but people generally try to avoid being rejected by their peers. It might not mean anything online in the grand scheme of things, but social media has tapped into our psyche to keep us coming back for more positive interactions.

Interestingly, that’s what someone said in the last post that claimed that people are doing it wrong. So, now we have two opposing claims, both of which are actually popular according to some people. Maybe half the world believes the other half is doing it wrong?

Maybe there is a a marginal belief which is truly unpopular. How about not voting at all? How about an even more obscure method where you never touch the upvote, but only selectively downvote specific posts that deserve to be buried?

On Reddit, I almost never upvoted/downvoted because I felt it didn’t make much of a difference that massive community.

But here on Lemmy, the community is small enough. I feel obligated to upvote as much as I can to help boost the community. Or downvote, on the rare occasion that requires it.

From comments I’ve read in other threads some lemmy instances show the number of up and down votes respectively.

but what criteria is being used to judge whether those votes were correct or not?

          I think it’s something like:

Did they use it? If so, they did it correctly. If not, they also did it correctly.

Your nicely upvoted post is the antithesis of a previous post which was heavily downvoted … and those two posts (and their votes) together shows you are right (as users votes consistently) … Although, this might not be an unpopular opinion … hummm …

indeed : if the post is sufficiently unpopular and repugnant to users it will be downvoted … but also if the post is appealing to user but at the same time it becomes popular (so not unpopular) then : well, you lose if you do, you lose if you don’t.
