That’s the ironic part. Even if we went back to 1800 the vast majority of these angry people wouldn’t be slave owners because they wouldn’t be able to afford it. They’d actually be far more likely to be debt-slaves than own any people themselves. The era they actually want to go back to is an idealized version of the 1950s, when you couldn’t own people but you could call them slurs in public, they had separate drinking fountains, and they lived far away from you. Plus you could hit your wife if dinner didn’t taste perfect, physical and mental abuse was how kids were raised (when you saw them at all), and one income could raise a family.

Sad how those last six words are the only thing we could agree on and should actually get back to, but it’s cheaper for the owner class to stoke hate.

Also you could either shame/harass LGBTQ people into suicide or just casually murder them yourself. And if you had a baby with obvious disabilities, they would be whisked away to an asylum for life and you’d never have to think about them again. Ah, the good old days!

It’s been coupled together from the start, but I have been seeing it more often recently, in particular with the whole Boeing fiasco, multiple outlets blaming DEI. Wouldn’t be surprised if Boeing was behind the propaganda efforts to help deflect responsibility.

It’s also being used in the Baltimore bridge collapse. Lots of “the boat wouldn’t have hit it if they had more white people on the crew. This was caused by DEI hiring inept crews” and “it’s cuz of all the lazy black people getting hired to work on the bridge. It wouldn’t have collapsed if white people were maintaining it” rhetoric.

Both of those felt gross to even type out, but I have 100% seen both of them being parroted in response to the collapse.

Not only is it gross and racist as you’ve laid out, I think the other purpose the “woke, esg, dei, crt” conspiracy stuff serves is as a thought ender. If a poorly maintained ship loses power and hits a bridge, you might start to think about why the economic incentives and laws are set up in such a way that would allow that to happen. But if someone blames it on dei, well, deep down there’s no way you’re really going to believe that. But it gives you a pressure release for the cognitive dissonance that otherwise might cause you to have to examine your own beliefs. The angrier you get about it, the less reflection you have to do. Especially as we are wired to be tribal, so blaming the screwup on the woke libs feels a lot better than listening and thinking through things.

I forgot what CRT was. It feels like its been years. Critical Race Theory, right? It was just a few months ago they were talking about it though.

Complaining about education (ex: common core) is pretty common because no one likes change. CRT could at least arguably be seen as a new subject matter / new way of teaching history that people wouldn’t like. But DEI is… like going really mask off now.

In practice, it’s more bureaucratic wall papering and cya, intended to obscure industry practices that continue to almost exclusively promote through nepotism and political graft.

Access to government contracts and Senate seats and Ivy League fraternities and Wall Street bank management positions continues to be a White Boys Only club.

Even with DEI practices, white straight males still hold a strong majority of the upper management positions; so whenever you hear about the evils of DEI while indulging in your daily Fox News, Daily Wire, or Newsmax, remember that the buck stops with some white straight males. Hence why blaming DEI for a decrease in quality makes no logical sense.

Most doctors are still straight white males. Most airline pilots are still straight white males. Most of the people who are making major company decisions are still straight white males.

I taught engineering courses for 10 years and have worked in the field longer than that, and I can assure you there is rarely a such thing as a “most competent person for the job.” Especially once you get to the highest levels of performance.

I can also assure you that teams which are allowed to stay familiar and homogeneous (eg, a bunch of bros who live together) and are never pushed to include diversity of experience and background rarely achieve anything notable compared to teams who are pushed beyond their cultural comfort zones. Anecdotally, the effect could not be more clear, and there’s plenty of peer reviewed literature documenting this.

Tl;Dr - mechanical diversity has intrinsic value. Read a book

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Conservatives have been going hard after diversity programs. They’ve been banned in state educational institutions in Texas.

Sure, the horrible slur of * checks notes * accurately getting described as part of the heteronormative majority

It’s insane, they think if they don’t like the label it automatically becomes a slur. The comment I responded to was even claiming calling someone dumb is a slur. Its mind boggling how people who have no idea what they are talking about think it’s a good idea to try and correct/lecture others.

DEI as I understand it right now means I’m expected to start giving a shit about what color people are and I simply will not do that.

Open to being corrected on if there’s a version of this that doesn’t have me categorizing people by skin color.

Don’t forget ESG. Conservatives love getting themselves worked up over corporate jargon
